Der ukrainische Präsident Wolodymyr Selenskyj will trotz der Kämpfe um Kiew die Hauptstadt nicht verlassen. «Ich bleibe in Kiew», sagte er in einer am Montagabend veröffentlichten Videobotschaft. Er verstecke sich nicht und habe vor niemandem Angst. «Heute ist der zwölfte Abend unseres Kampfes, unserer Verteidigung. Wir sind alle vor Ort, alle arbeiten. Jeder, wo er muss. Ich bin in Kiew, mein Team mit mir.»

Nach Angaben des Präsidialamts rief Selenskyj die ukrainischen Soldaten zurück, die in Auslandsmissionen eingesetzt sind. Die «hochprofessionelle Militärs» würden im Kampf gegen die «russische Aggression» benötigt, hieß es. Ukrainischen Medien zufolge beteiligt sich das Land an Einsätzen im Kosovo, Kongo und der Elfenbeinküste.

Selenskyj kritisierte scharf einen russischen Luftangriff westlich von Kiew, bei dem nach ukrainischen Angaben mindestens 13 Zivilisten getötet worden waren. «Heute haben sie in Makariw in der Region Kiew eine Bäckerei beschossen. Wofür? Eine alte Bäckerei. Denken Sie nach: sie beschießen eine Bäckerei. Wer muss man sein, um so etwas zu tun?»

Russische Truppen stehen nordwestlich von Kiew und versuchen, auch von Westen auf die Hauptstadt vorzurücken. Russland beharrt darauf, dass seine Truppen keine zivilen Ziele in der Ukraine angreifen.

Selenskyj sagte, man werde weiter mit Russland sprechen. «Wir sind Realisten. Deshalb werden wir reden. Wir werden auf Verhandlungen bestehen, bis wir einen Weg finden, unseren Menschen zu sagen: So kommen wir zum Frieden», sagte er. Jeder Tag des Kampfes schaffe «bessere Bedingungen» für die Ukraine. «Eine starke Position. Um unsere Zukunft zu sichern. Nach diesem Krieg.»

Angesichts der sich verschärfenden Lage bat der ukrainische Staatschef Wolodymyr Selenskyj erneut um westliche Unterstützung. Mit Blick auf finanzielle Hilfen und die "Fortsetzung von Sanktionen" gegen Russland habe er erneut mit US-Präsident Joe Biden telefonierte, twitterte er.

Kiew fordert von der westlichen Gemeinschaft noch härtere Strafmaßnahmen gegen Russland, insbesondere gegen dessen Energiesektor. Den Appell der ukrainischen Regierung an die Nato, eine Flugverbotszone einzurichten, hat das Westbündnis unter Verweis auf eine drohende weitere Eskalation des Konflikts abgelehnt.

Seine Bereitschaft, in dem Konflikt zu vermitteln, erklärte am Samstag Israels Regierungschef Bennett bei einem dreistündigen Treffen mit Putin in Moskau. Das Treffen sei mit den USA, Deutschland und Frankreich abgestimmt gewesen, sagte ein israelischer Regierungsvertreter. 

Bennett reiste noch am Samstagabend von Moskau weiter nach Berlin, wo er in der Nacht Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz (SPD) über die Ergebnisse seiner Unterredung mit Putin informierte. Details des 90-minütigen Treffens von Scholz und Bennett wurden nicht bekannt. Ein Regierungssprecher erklärte, beide wollten "eng in Kontakt" bleiben. Gemeinsames Ziel bleibe es, "den Krieg in der Ukraine so schnell wie irgend möglich zu beenden".

Nach Angaben seines Büros telefonierte Bennett zudem zweimal mit Selenskyj sowie mit Frankreichs Staatschef Emmanuel Macron. Selenskyj hatte Bennett kürzlich um Vermittlung gebeten. Israel unterhält gute Beziehungen sowohl zur Ukraine als auch zu Russland.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace says Russia's invasion of Ukraine is not going as well as Putin had expected.

The minister told Sky News the single biggest losses so far are likely to be Russian soldiers.

And he said the Home Office is determined to speed up the process of granting visas to Ukrainian refugees, with only 300 visas issued so far.

Hunderte Männer haben sich in Kiew als Freiwillige für das ukrainische Militär gegen Russland zur Verfügung gestellt. Gemäß einer Anordnung der ukrainischen Regierung dürfen Männer im Alter von 18 bis 60 Jahren die Ukraine nicht verlassen, falls sie zum Militär eingezogen werden sollen. Wolodymyr Onysko kam ohne Zwang, um sich den Streitkräften anzuschließen. «Wir wissen, warum wir hier sind. Wir wissen, warum wir unser Land verteidigen», sagte Onysko dem britischen Sender Sky News. Sie wüssten, was sie tun, «und deshalb werden wir gewinnen».

Der britische Militärveteran Mark Ayres kam aus dem Ausland in die Ukraine, um zu helfen. Die Ukrainer seien eine Inspiration gewesen, sagte Ayres. «Ich mache mir keine Illusionen.» Er denke sich nicht, dass er einen Unterschied machen werde oder ein Held sein werde.

Video footage reportedly released by a Spanish speaking Journalist on Instagram shows the moment Russian soldiers abandoned their vehicles to run for cover under heavy Ukrainian artillery fire.

The frames also show a Journalist who is in the middle of the Russian soldiers and also leaves the scene with them.

It is unclear if that was the journalist who released this video or if he was another persumably Russian journalist embedded with Russian troops on the ground.

It was not reported were exactly in Ukraine this took place and it is also unknown which artillery system was used for the strike.

The EU and especially Germany recently announced the supply of old East German D-30 artillery howitzers to Ukraine.

This delivery will be made by Estonia with approval of the German and Finish government to boost Ukraines defense capabilities.

The D-30 is a 122mm artillery howitzer of Soviet orgin that has a range of about 15 kilometers.

While as of 2018 Ukraine already was in use of 129 of these howitzers it is unclear how many already got destroyed by Russian attacks all over the country.

The first ceasefire attempted in Ukraine to evacuate civilians collapsed not long after it began. Ukrainian officials accuse Russia of breaking the partial truce, with efforts to allow more than 200,000 people to escape the fighting having been halted and residents have been forced to turn back. David Akin has our top story.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that any third-party declaration of a no-fly zone over Ukraine would be seen as participation in the war. It came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged U.S. lawmakers to push NATO into action and asked for more humanitarian aid as the refugee crisis worsens. Jennifer Johnson reports.

With the growing challenge to get into Ukraine, Global News teams have been reporting from neighbouring countries for more than a week. But today, a first-hand look on the ground in Lviv from Mike Armstrong who takes us through his journey to enter the war-torn country.
